Vacant Lot Library
San Francisco is dotted with vacant lots, unused and often forgotten spaces concentrated in the poorest neighborhoods of the city. This project proposes creating a network of outdoor libraries within vacant lots. By converting these spaces into learning landscapes, San Francisco will invest in the knowledge of it’s citizens and transform the forgotten into public spaces that help support creativity, education and community, the foundation for a truly sustainable city.

Embracing Winter
This project addresses an unprecedented tangle of environmental, climatic and cultural issues presented by the city of Yatutsk, in the Russian northeast. The coldest city on earth, built on continuous permafrost, Yakutsk, is faced with an environmental crisis stemming from inadequate planning, pollution, and poor building practices. Building Resilience: The Re-Charging of Tobago’s Buccoo Reef
This thesis attempts to ameliorate vital tourism development in Tobago with the sensitive coral reef ecology at its centre. Buccoo Reef, the region’s only marine protected area and largest fringing coral reef, is the site of focus. The project aims to evolve area reef recreation while supporting reef ecology via a combination of zoning and sustainable infrastructure. A key component is an artificial reef technology that improves the ability of coral to resist environmental stress.
Ephemeral Boundaries
Fathomed as a phenomenological space, the conceptual objective encouraged a natural system brought back to life in order to educate and represent. A reflection of sprawl throughout the site signals engagement. The strategy of implementing boundaries as ephemeral and fluctuating was utilized in the captivating and sustainable ecosystem of the South Florida Everglades.
Biophones
Biophones serves as an environmental measuring device and also trains the human ear to notice the subtle nuances in our soundscapes. It connects people to the natural habitat through sound as animal calls become an indicator of environmental health. Biophones trains people to be advocates of natural soundscape awareness and preservation by teaching observers how to listen.
Puddlescape: Freshwater Marsh and the Urban Matrix
Expanses of flat, vacant land make the Lower Ninth Ward look like a wet meadow. This project proposes a transformation of the landscape matrix that allows the Lower Ninth Ward to regain its vibrant neighborhood density while appreciating the water and plants as valuable resources. From sidewalks to ponds, the ground is demonstrated to perform as a sponge and a reservoir across multiple scales and materials, revealing the presence, movement, poetry, and productivity of water.
Living Scaffold: Reimagining the Continental Bridge
Our project transforms the Continental Bridge into a dynamic connection between the Dallas downtown urban edge and new Trinity River Park. We reimagine the bridge as a layered experience that accentuates contextual datums intrinsic to the site. The project creates a living scaffold which synthesizes the energy and vivacity of the city with the rhythms, cycles, and seasons of the Trinity River.

Homegrown: A Residential Guide to Edibility
This project examines the potential for urban residences to become self-sustaining and productive environments using a ¼ acre lot in Muncie, Indiana as an example. It explores how society has grown further from nature, creating a gap that has resulted in the underutilization of the environment. This project reconnects humans to nature while creating more sustainable environments to live in, benefiting nature as well as the health, wealth, and happiness of people and their communities.
Productive End Walls
This project tackles economic and spatial constraints in low-cost housing sites by generating “arable land” from under-utilized end walls. Through analyzing how villagers cultivate plants in unimaginable spots, this wall farming system integrates the villagers’ creativity as an essential component in unlocking the full potential of end-walls. Sh*tscape: Mumbai’s Landscape In-Between
A growing number of the world’s population has little or no access to sanitation. This is particularly prevalent in India, where over 750 million people are without adequate sanitation facilities. Few designers have attempted to grapple with this ‘dirty’ subject. Sh*tscape: Mumbai’s Landscape In-Between proposes the making of an entirely functioning landscape built from human excreta. It will recover the ‘soil’ from the settlements while extracting the beneficial flora from the forest and, in turn, utilize both as a generator for a new and evolving landscape.

Last Grain: Revising the End of the Fossil Fuel Era and Canada’s Oil Sands Legacy
Canada’s oil sands are called the “dirtiest oil on earth”, which come with a deleterious environmental impact. This thesis uses landscape ecology to reorganize the oil sands’ surface mining operations and reclamation processes. It aims to redeem Canada’s damaged environmental reputation while searching for a place for landscape architecture within this contemporary industrial process.
Filling the Gap: A New Productive Land-Building Process for New Orleans, Louisiana
This is a proposal to address New Orleans’ problem of coastal erosion to prevent storm surge and its threat existing ever since the construction of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO). It expands the land building program of Louisiana to include habitat, specifically alligators to re-populate the new wetland area and encourage the establishment of vegetation. This collective project — one studio, twelve participants — forced us to speculate on the nature of design and democracy in an ecological age. The Washington Mall, the most heavily visited national park and our most important public forum for democratic life, cannot be sustained in its present condition. Tactical Operations in the Informal City
13 students from the Harvard Graduate School of Design developed, with the assistance of São Paulo’s Social Housing Agency Sehab, design tactics for the 30,000 person favela, Cantinho do Céu, in the South of São Paulo. “Tactical Operations in the Informal City” summarizes the basic ideas that were developed under the guidance of instructors Christian Werthmann, Fernando de Mello Franco and a range of consultants. The results allow us a glimpse into the future of slum upgrading, leading to a more integrative and tactical design practice.

Your Fault
The inspiration for the San Jose earthquake fault project arose from the large amount of high magnitude earthquakes that have been on the rise around the world. The temporary land art installation was designed to bring awareness to a student community about the actual fault lines that run through their Southern California college campus. The Cooling Ability of Urban Parks
This study investigated the potential of urban parks to mitigate the urban heat island effects of their surroundings. Results indicated that parks were up to 7°C cooler than their surrounding streets, and that park cooling, while variable, can extend almost 100m beyond a park’s boundaries. From this research, it is possible to generate design implications that can inform urban park and street design, creating cooler neighborhoods, increased human thermal comfort, and climate-sensitive design.

Discovering the Grand Canal Heritage in the Changing Landscape
The Grand Canal of China is the longest and oldest man-made canal in the world. However, due to lack of identification, valuation, and preservation, the canal heritage is in crisis. Combining the application of historical literature, historical maps, GIS, and field study, we tried to develop an integrated heritage identification method of the Grand Canal taking the case of Jining section, which features the highest hydro-engineering difficulty of the canal.

The daily lives and livelihoods of an estimated 500 million people worldwide are affected by the alteration of river flows downstream of large dams. Landscape Progress Administration
In the wake of California’s 2009 budget crisis, funding was slashed to public programs across the state. As we saw staff and faculty furloughed and student services threatened in our own department, we took action. Our student group led a participatory process to reach out to public schools and parks similarly impacted by the budget cuts. Dubbing ourselves the Landscape Progress Administration, our department volunteered both time and expertise in support of public landscapes.

Salvage Park
Today, public parks are designed as though they are given a blank canvas to work from. However, many park sites already contain existing users, mostly undesirable. Salvage Park conversely, embraces these cultures and encourages users to build upon the established space instead of destroying it. More tangible conditions of the city of Caracas, is the vast difference that lives and perceives between formal and informal city. Thinking about integrating both seem almost intractable problem, so we propose to achieve conditions that approximate both realities through the public space, including parks as the place of representation of equity, covering the integration of art and Landscape quality economically feasible with a response to the needs of communities.

Catalytic Integration: Redefining Desert Tourism
This project introduces a new concept for sustainable tourism in remote desert locale. Through the collaboration of Architect and Landscape Architect, this design exhibits new program that capitalizes on local resources and context while also providing a new hotel typology that weaves seamlessly into the existing village, oasis and surrounding context. The result, a desert golf tourist development that has minimal environmental impact, enhances local culture and program, and improves local economy and revenue.
