ASLA Comments to FHWA to Reduce Greenhouse Gases
Specifically, ASLA urged the agency to encourage increased use of active transportation projects, including prioritizing walking, biking, transit use, and more, as a strategy for states to achieve GHG reductions.

ASLA’s comments applauded FHWA for taking action to address the climate crisis through transportation sector initiatives. ASLA pointed out that the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel to move people and goods was the largest source of GHG emissions in the United States in 2020, accounting for 27 percent of the nation’s emissions. So, it is imperative for FHWA to take these steps to address the climate crisis.
Specifically, ASLA urged the agency to encourage increased use of active transportation projects, including prioritizing walking, biking, transit use, and more, as a strategy for states to achieve GHG reductions. ASLA also urged FHWA to request states to focus emission reduction strategies and efforts on underserved communities, which have traditionally been burdened by increased carbon emissions and other environmental injustices.
Nearly 40,000 individuals and organizations provided comments on FHWA’s proposal.
